At its 10th Anniversary Ocean Gala, San Diego Coastkeeper announced a $2 million endowment drive to provide a permanent funding source for the organization. The ORCA Fund of the San Diego Foundation has already committed a $500,000 challenge grant to launch the drive, meaning any dollar contributed to the Endowment Fund will be worth $2 in coastal protection!
Why Have a Coastkeeper Endowment Campaign?
San Diego Coastkeeper has achieved broad recognition for its many achievements in protecting San Diego's waterways and educating its young people over the past decade. The need for San Diego Coastkeeper's work is ongoing. For that reason, Coastkeeper has established an endowment and formed and independent Board of Trustees to help build and manage that endowment to ensure a permanent funding source for the organization.
What is An Endowment
Endowments are funds with the requirement that the principal is never spent. The balance in these funds is invested, earning income that is then spent to support charitable works in perpetuity. For organizations like Coastkeeper, which currently receives most of its funds through annual grants, an endowment can be a critical strategy to provide a permanent source of revenue that can be used for general operating funds or specific campaigns or program work.
